Holiday Diaries 2018

UPDATED July 2018

This post is a little late being published this year but none-the-less, here it is. Now, 2017 was a fantastic year for holidays for the Battle Family. I have no idea how we are going to beat it. But, as wanderlusters we will strive to enjoy whatever holidays we have planned. And so far we have three booked.

As for last year, we started the year with a scouting mission to Portugal in readiness for our permanent move here. Then, after what felt like a very long wait, we were finally on our 2-week USA road trip. And what a trip that turned out to be. Only a few weeks after we returned from the States, we were back in the UK to experience a mid-week stay in Bluestone as part of their Bluestone Bloggers Programme. And we ended the year in style by visiting Disneyland Paris in December. BattleKid keeps asking to go back to the castle every time we watch a Disney film.

So, what do we have planned so far for this year I hear you ask? Well, firstly, BattleKid and I are off to Ireland over Easter for a 10-day trip. We are starting with a 7-day road trip in the southern half of the country where we will take in places like the Rock of Cashel, Blarney Castle and Fota Wildlife Park. After our mini road trip, we’ll be heading up to Dublin to visit family and to also spend a day being a tourist in Dublin, thanks to an amazing collaboration with a tourism company (more on that to come). I’m really looking forward to our trip to Ireland, which is only a matter of a few weeks away now.

I’m heading to Edinburgh with my sisters and a dear friend for a girls weekend at the start of June and I cannot wait. It comes on the back of our epic girls weekend in London when we saw Take That in concert. We’ll be redoing that trip next year as the boys are embarking on a world tour in 2019 so I do wonder what city we’ll choose for the concert and our girly weekend away. I’m eagerly awaiting the ticket sales to be announced for that!

The next trip we have booked is a long weekend as a family in Barcelona at the beginning of July. BattleDad is going to see Guns and Roses in concert there. When I discovered we can get a direct flight from Faro to Barcelona, I asked could BattleKid and I tag along. We’re going for four and a half days, and I’m looking forward to visiting this famous Spanish city.Β

And last but not least, we have an awesome trip mostly planned for December. We’re going to visit Santa in Lapland, and we’ll also spend a few days in Helsinki as well. And this is the trip that has me most excited. I am literally hopping with excitement. We have our flights to Helsinki booked, and are finalising our accommodation. We will also need to sort our transfers from the capital to Lapland nearer the time but I know it’s going to be amazing. There are a few final details we need to sort out with family we’ll be joining there, but for now, it’s shaping up nicely.Β

The three trips we have planned so far are going to be wonderful, but I don’t think we’re done yet. We are weighing up options for another trip at the end of the summer and it’s between two options. Both will entail a road trip, as we’ve really been bitten by the road trip bug since our epic time in America last year. It will very much depend on BattleDad’s work commitments and whether we can take one or two weeks. I’m really hoping we can stretch to the two weeks as I have something in mind for that. But if not, we’ll plan the one week in the coming month or two. So watch this space for updates.

UPDATE: We’ve booked a short week-long road trip so we can finally start exploring the northern half of Portugal. We will be visiting Trialmotor in Lousa again so both BattleKid and I can have a trials bike lesson. After spending two days there we’re heading to Nazare in the hope we might see some of the epic waves we’ve read about and seen in the news. And after two days there, we are heading to Cascais near Lisbon for three nights to explore Cascais, Sintra and Lisbon. And we’re really looking forward to seeing Lisboa for the first time.

UPDATE #2: BattleKid and I are returning to Cardiff in October for a long weekend. I need to do some banking things so thought it would be a good excuse to catch up with friends at the same time. We have a bank holiday on a Friday in October (Portugal have weird bank holidays), so I thought I’d extend the weekend and hop on a plane with the boy. A friend kindly offered to put us up for the weekend so I’ve booked flights for the boy and I. I am hoping we’ll also get a chance to visit Caerphilly Castle for some dragon hunting.

That’s our travel plans so far for 2018. I’ll update this post if anything suddenly appears on the horizon.

Have you got any trips planned for this year, and if so, where are you going? Inspire me!

  1. You have some amazing trips planned for this year! My soon to be mother-in-law takes the grandkids to visit Santa each year. She does it as a day trip where she wakes them up very early in the morning saying that Santa has left a note for them to visit him and they have to hurry to get to the airport. Then they go on the dedicated children’s flight to lapland for the day and get back at night. It sounds so good!

    1. I did look up the costs of the one-day and overnight trips but I’ve managed to get both Lapland for a few days and a few days in Helsinki for the same amount as it would have cost us for just one day x

  2. Last year looks so fun and your plans so far for this year look very exciting. The scouting missions are such fun aren’t they!! Full of excitement and possibility and tinged with a little scariness πŸ™‚

  3. Wow, it sounds like you have an incredible year lined up. I’d love to go to Lapland – what a treat, especially for the littles! Being pregnant with baby number two means we’re forgoing our holiday this year, but we are making sure we make the most of our weekends and half terms !

    1. We’ve never been to Barcelona so am looking forward to visiting. And yes, I cannot wait to get to Finland. Really looking forward to our son’s reaction at meeting Santa in his actual home.

  4. What a fab 2017 you all had! I’ve been travelling a lot too, but without my family, much to their frustration. Here’s to 2018 and another year of wanderlust! πŸ™‚

  5. I love having travel plans to look forward too. It sounds like you have some amazing trips planned, Lapland will be amazing! I too am off to Dublin this year to visit family, my dad is from there and hasn’t been back since he was a child so myself and my brother are taking him. We are also off to Majorca on a family holiday. x
