This weekend I took BattleKid on another dragon hunting expedition, this time to Raglan Castle near Abergavenny. It’s less than 25 minutes away from our house and is a splendid castle. He has visited once before with me when he was around 7 months old, and again last summer with BattleDad. But he and I hadn’t been dragon hunting here together so it was about time we did.

We had a lovely hour strolling around the castle and almost making it to the top of one of the towers before he spotted BattleDad’s car in the car park and that was it. We didn’t go any further. I took lots of pictures, as you do, and my personal favourite from our time there was this one below.

This weekend the weather was against us. We had great plans to go dragon hunting and have adventures but when we woke on Saturday we were greeted by the white stuff, snow! There went our plans, buried under snow. Now you might say “well why did you let it stop you”. It stopped us because it was bitterly cold out. The roads weren’t in great shape and it really wasn’t worth it. Sunday was the same. Instead we spent most of the weekend indoors.

Saturday was a very lazy day with films, popcorn and all-round pure laziness. Sunday morning BattleDad had work to do so I took BattleKid downstairs. Instead of resorting to turning the TV on we made towers, played roads (as BattleKid likes to call it), read stories and gave a penguin some hugs. It was a pleasant morning with the boy until BattleDad joined us for a late brunch.

We did venture out later on Sunday to soft play, BattleDad’s first experience of it, but otherwise it was a quiet weekend. This week’s Living Arrows pictures come from our morning together.

We ended up with cars crashed into each other which he found hilarious!

And my personal favourite picture of our morning spent together was the one below. He scrunched up his face while trying to get the final part of the tower built. It’s frustrating work being 3 years of age!

This weekend I finally pulled myself together and set up a photo shoot for a cake smash for BattleKid’s 3rd birthday, albeit a month late. I know they are more popular for 1st birthday’s but I did one last year and was very happy with the results so I thought why not.

I got my lights out, chose a background and flooring and used a decorate-your-own cake. I bought a cake topper from the lady on Etsy who made BattleKid’s Curious George cake topper for last year. This year we had a Thomas the Tank Engine theme so that’s what I went for and I must say I was quite pleased with the final cake. All that was left to do was put some bunting up and get the birthday boy.

BattleKid, like previous years, didn’t quite smash the cake, instead getting inside very gently and helping himself to handfuls of icing and cake along the way. Soon after he let his foot hover over the cake and we said “go on”, so he did! Here are a few pictures of said foot-in-the-cake moments.

And one if my personal favourites of the shoot was this one below. I love his smile in this, happy and natural.

06/52 My Sunday Photo: 05/02/2017

my sunday photo
Although it’s not really traditional to continue them after the first birthday, I did another cake smash for BattleKid this weekend to celebrate his 3rd birthday, which was a month ago. I did one for his first birthday and it was ok for a first try. Last year’s smash was much better and I was alot happier with the pictures I got then. So I thought I’d get my lights and backgrounds out and do another one. As per the previous two years he didn’t smash it at all, instead simply enjoying it at his leisure. He came out rather clean too at the end. Here is one picture from near the start of the shoot. Hope you’ve had a great weekend.

On Saturday we went to see a friend in Swansea and as BattleKid and I were on our own this weekend I decided to to waste the day but going home. Instead we drove from Swansea towards Llandeilo to visit Carreg Cennan Castle. It is a ruined castle, since the late 1400’s and is a Cadw site now, meaning we got free entry with our membership.

It was overcast and grey when we first arrived and I wasn’t sure the rain would hold off but it did and the sun even made an appearance through breaks in the clouds. The main purpose of our visit, as with any castle, was to see if a dragon could be found hiding somewhere in it. We searched high and low and a baby one eventually revealed himself, much to BattleKid’s delight.living arrows living arrows

Despite the sun it was very chilly up on the hill, a hill I wasn’t sure BattleKid would make up but he did, so after we descended the hill we shared a Welsh cawl (thick soup) to warm ourselves up before driving the 41 miles home. Below is my favourite picture of the day; a happy boy who conquered a hill to hunt a dragon in a castle.
